  17. My world is just that bit smaller with the passing of Mick Holland. Now most who know me would understand I have a love of camping and the outdoors that borders on madness – and the seed for that was firmly planted, fertilised and nurtured in my time in Scouts,
Mick was the best leader a kid could hope for, full of fun, mischief, activity, imagination and dare I say it, discipline. His discipline was quiet, firm and largely unspoken – you just didn’t want to let him down. When you did let him down he made sure you knew it without making a fool of you – and he was always keen to get back into the fun stuff as soon as possible!!
From father and son camps with their legendary Pt Franklin treasure hunts to Gilweroo camps at Gembrook to the simple nights at 1st Colac’s hall with the fire roaring as we filled in our Friday nights with games, activities and learning. It was plain to see that Mick enjoyed those nights as much as the Scouts did.
Dad was president of the group at the time which meant that when Scouts finished at 9.30pm Dad and Mick had to talk about all the things the president and leader need to talk about (which, by the way, I now realise had nothing to do with Scouts!!!) so myself and some others would continue messing about in the hall having an absolute ball.
When I was 21, I read that 1st Colac Scouts was going to fold due to the lack of a leader. I decided to put my hand up and step into the role, but not before discussing with my parents and Mick. My biggest memory of that time was wondering how the hell I would even approach being a leader as good as Mick was.
I settled into the role and found my feet, but then was faced with taking over 20 kids to Gembrook for Gilweroo Camp (a camp with approx. 1200 attendees at the time – huge). I was nervous as hell and decided to go and see Mick for advice.
Long story short we ran through everything that was needed and soon found that I really needed a cook who could keep the food up to our troop – and Mick was gracious enough to offer to come along as camp cook (joined by Terry Matthews). The relief I felt was huge, as not only did I have a cook but I had a wise head to turn to if I needed.
At the end of the camp (which was an absolute success) Mick shook my left hand (as Scouts do), looked me in the eye and told me I had ran a bloody good camp, paused and added “nearly as good as mine” – we cracked up laughing and gave each other a heap of cheek as we always did.
I went on to serve in leadership roles for decades and got a few awards, badges and certificates as result, but none of them came close to standing in the middle of the bush, covered in a couple of days grit and dust shaking hands as a peer with a guy that I had huge admiration for.
I was fortunate enough to stay in touch with Mick over the years and enjoys many great times with him after Scouting, he was a legend and will be sadly missed.
    RIP Mick. Gone home.
