I was so sad to hear of Johns passing... to this day (over 40 yrs on) I cannot have a bowl of ice-cream without hearing a "Deborah, Deborah, Deborah" in my head, mixing your ice-cream into a thickshake was not something you were supposed to do I guess..lol, and the phrase "are you sure" has been used on my children and grandchildren many times, echoing the question I was asked when I went running into the Stoneyford house one day, after visiting the outside toilet to find a snake waiting for me behind the door when i closed it, running inside like a mad person, I was very calmly asked the question by John, "are you sure?".. I often still have a laugh about it now, and yes i was sure.
My deepest Sympathies to Betty, David and his family.August 29, 2023 12:45 pm

I'm very sorry to hear of John's passing. He was my Grades 5 and 6 teacher and Principal at Garfield Primary School back in the early 70s. He had a big impact on our lives, with his fair and compassionate technique for discipline, the way he modelled respect and thoughtfulness in our interactions with our classmates, and his encouragement of curiosity and learning. I think he was a gifted teacher who devoted himself to his teaching, and he had a vision of what a nurturing school community in a rural location could be. He encouraged singing, art and sport as well as the academic curriculum, all of which he delivered himself. His contribution to the culture at Garfield back then continues in the lives of the people he influenced. I consider myself fortunate to have been in his class. It has been wonderful to reconnect with John and Betty in recent years and confirm my impression of him with adult eyes and see the happy family and community life he has enjoyed right up till now. My heartfelt sympathy to Betty and David and all of his family and friends.

I was really sorry to read of John's passing. I have happy memories of my last year or 2 at Primary School at Garfield with John and Betty teaching us. I will be forever grateful to John for the photos of us at the school that he went to all the trouble of having copied and sent to me as a remembrance of our school days and of my late brother Douglas. So many years have passed since we knew each other, but that seemed to make no difference. Sympathy cards, Christmas cards and the occasional phone chat back in the day to keep in touch, but as life does, it gets in the way and we lose touch with good people, sadly.
My sympathy goes to Betty and the family.
