A tribute to one of lives true legend
—Neil “Tige” Conway.
A man with a heart as big as his shout at the bar, Tige was more than just a familiar face; he was a presence, a character, and a mate to so many.
Tige loved the simple things in life: a cold beer, a Scotch whisky, and a good punt at the TAB or pokies.
But above all, he loved his footy. Whether it was cheering on Collingwood or sitting in his car proudly on the sidelines at a Colac Imperials football game, Tige’s passion for the game was unwavering.
As a life member of the Imps, he wasn’t just a supporter—he was part of the club’s fabric. Back in the day if there was an Imps game on, you could bet Tige was there, watching the juniors through to the seniors, backing the boys every step of the way.
And if you didn’t find him at the footy, you knew exactly where he’d be—holding court at one of his two corners.
One At the Imps clubrooms, where there’s a plaque that reads Tige’s Corner, a tribute to the countless hours he spent there, beer in hand, sharing stories, laughs, and wisdom.
And the other was the Union Hotel—his other home—where a sign at the old bar read Reserved for PMG Workers only, but let’s be honest, it may as well have read Reserved for Tige.
Everyone in town knew that’s where they’d find him, surrounded by mates new and old, young and seasoned, shouting beers and telling yarns.
Many of the young blokes who wandered into the Union thought they’d have a crack at drinking Tige under the table. They’d give it their best, but more often than not, they’d end up staggering out the door, crawling on their hands and knees, or getting a little too well acquainted with the gutter.
And Tige? He’d just chuckle, finish his drink, and wave down a cab - cool, calm, and undefeated.
But Tige was more than just the life of the party. He was generous, loyal, and always up for a chat. He had time for everyone and made sure no one drank alone. Whether you were a regular or a stranger, if you pulled up a stool next to Tige, you’d walk away feeling like a mate and drunk. lol
So let’s raise a glass to Tige, a man who lived on his own terms, loved his family, footy, his mates, and his whisky, and left behind a legacy of good times and great memories.
Rest easy, Tige.
