My Big Brother
You were nearly 11 when I was born,so you were very much my big brother. My memories of you back then are of your balsa aircraft models hanging in your bedroom and the very strong smell of glue, the wonderful working model steam engine and the trains and tracks laid out in the front room.it’s so long ago now but fragments come back, holidays in Devon, sailing small boats at the Hollow ponds with your friends, you pushing me round the garden in the red engine and the day you fished me out when I fell in the pond, shortly after you and Dad had remodelled it!
When you were old enough ,you used to cycle out into Essex at weekends to go and help on the farm - sowing seeds for your future life.
Then when you were 18 it was a first goodbye for us.You were called up to do National Service and became a police dog handler in the RAF in Northern Ireland . We were sad to see you go and Mum and Dad were worried about your safety because of the ‘troubles’ but we were very proud of you in your uniform and it was lovely when you came home on leave.
At last the 2 years were up and you came back to us. You were now a very grown up big brother, going to work in the City every day. We thought you were back for good but it wasn’t to be for long because you met Norma, fell in love and followed her back to Australia in February 1957.
This goodbye was very hard and for many months I used to rush home from school in the hope that you had returned.
You and Norma worked so hard and made a wonderful life together and you achieved your goal of owning your own farm. It was to be many years before you were able to pay us a visit. When you did, you were able to spend time with all the family and we all got to know you. I got to know what I missed growing up without you!
We last met in 2023 and when you left we had an extra tight hug. I think we both knew we were unlikely to meet again.
This then is the final very sad goodbye.
Love you BIg Bro.
Rest In Peace.

Heartbroken. What a wonderful man. I have missed and will miss you dearly Darl, which we called each other 🫶 I feel blessed to have met an initially grumpy old bugger who then became a friend indeed.
