  28. On behalf of Mum – Monica Matthews, (nee Garner)
Deepest sympathy to you all, my heart was with you today. With special memories of the times that I had, when leaving boarding school, and Lex would look after me particularly well – getting me to and from my social outings in the truck.
A very special memory is when we were leaving the farm, and He simply said, Is there anything you would like to do before you leave the farm? I said I have never been up onto the Warrion Hill to see where Des died ( In 1942) and He said, right we are going. So Lex, Allan and I went, and I cherish that memory for the rest of my life – along with rose petals from each home, we were able to scatter, and it was so beautiful. We shared many special moments growing up as Brother and Sister. I looked on today, as a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.
    Love from Monica.

  36. Lex was a gentle giant of a man. He was generous, loving, honest and idiosyncratic.
What impressed me most about Lex was his dogged sense of Justice. He was a moral person who could differentiate easily between right and wrong. When caught in the hurly-burly, where truth was being argued – we could see Lex going in on the side of right; he didn’t like being confronted by liars or hypocrites. He knew what was right and was like a dog with a bone incessantly arguing to prove his point. My view was that he was mostly right and I loved the energy of his pursuit of the truth, fairness and ultimately justice.
If Lex inspired people to be like him, the world would be a better place. He wasn’t confounded by complications he took them in his stride into The Battle.
Lex never went to Ireland – he never got around to it – he still thought of himself as an Irishman and I did too, Vale Lexie-Boy.
