  17. Ros
    R.I.P

One of a kind, that’s for sure.
You were definitely in the minority at work if you called Ros a mate.

Easy to see why, as she was a bit rough around the edges (& that’s putting it lightly!) and a little difficult to get along with at times but hey, wasn’t every comedian, genius, artist, eccentric creator & far out musician?

Best year spent teaching, thus far, was when I got put in the same office as Ros and actually sat on the desk next to Ros for the year.

Any “difficult” behavior from Ros was very easily and quickly cancelled out (in my eyes) when she cracked jokes, whilst making the funniest facial expressions & voices to match. F*k*en made me laugh so hard!
Ros has given me some of the best laughing fits to date. She’d have me in stitches when I least expected it & for that, I’m eternally grateful!

What I admired in Ros, perhaps I lack myself, but her knack for not giving a f**k what any one thought was pure gold & never ceased to amaze me!

Ros was passionate about a lot, especially music. She always encouraged me to sing. I didn’t think anything of it at the time but looking back, that’s special.
On the few occasions that I did sing along to an Ella Fitzgerald tune whilst Ros was playing, I had an absolute ball! I felt alive like my soul was flying or dancing or at home or at peace or something along those lines! I never did thank you for that, Ros.

I know there’s plenty of students out there that won’t forget you in a hurry, Ros.
Firstly, coz you are quiet unforgettable, especially when you randomly whip out your harmonica during class in order to gain the attention of your students or when you sat on the grass, strumming a tune on your guitar, during the annual ‘Maribyrnong Swimming Sports Carnival’ , attracting certain types of students to sit calmly by your side to enjoy the music.
Secondary, your students will remember you coz you most likely said something in your eccentric style that bamboozled them and made them stop & think & ask questions.

    & thirdly,
only the ones that affectionetly called you,
    “Rozzie”,
    know the answer to that.

I imagine you’re now having a nice catch up over a cuppa with your beloved Mother, who you spoke of often, with such admiration. I hope you are.
If I had of known you were gonna go cark it so soon, I’d have gotten my arse into gear alot quicker in order to,
“catch up for another jam sesh!”.

  27. Musician, artiste, teacher, motivator, antagonist, friend, sister and footy tragic. An exceptional, complex, witty, intelligent, hugely talented human being who generously shared her immense knowledge and skills with so many of us. Always true to herself, wonderfully unconventional and country to the core, a true diamond in the rough.
We shared our own unique footy commentary every weekend and she was always pointing out players she taught at school.
Music was her life and first language, and words here seem quite inadequate.
No more grief or dealing with ” the stuff” of this world, now at home with Robert and Dot.
Fly high Rozzie, peace and love be with you, you will always be with me.

  33. Ros taught with us at Maribyrnong College since 2003. She enjoyed encouraging students to develop and express their artistic capability, and also enjoyed playing guitar with students. She taught woodwork, visual communication and design, art and digital photography and liked to share her interest in cinema, music, photography, and design. She encouraged students to follow their creative passions and provided opportunities for self-expression and personal development including through contributions to the school magazine. Ros was well-known around the College and was often one of the first members of staff to welcome a new teacher to Maribyrnong. In recent years she struggled with her health and was not able to teach regularly at the school. Despite this, she still took an interest in staff activities and was still involved in the staff football tipping competition during the current AFL season. Ros had a long career in education and her passing came as a shock to staff at Maribyrnong College. On behalf of the College I would like to offer Ros’ family and friends the condolences of the Maribyrnong community. I know many of Ros’ colleagues, as well as students past and present, will miss her.

  36. Dearest Ros, Although we sadly never met in person, I will miss your constant friendship by phone, SMS and email. We were fellow conspirators on ABC Nightlife and Overnight quizzes Some years ago when you learnt I was teaching myself guitar melody you made contact, advised, encouraged me, emailed lovely Fernando Sor music and have been a real pal in the small hours. Although opposites in some ways, we shared common interests in the wonderfully wide world of music. It has been a mighty privilege to share your happy and sad times in those lovely long phone chats and very recent texts. Love from June.

A genuine and supportive teacher and I thank you for the positive impressions you have left on my children. I will fondly remember the lovely chats had at parent teacher interviews. 44. I can only repeat what others have said, you were definitely one in a million Ros, we shared a birthday and when I first met you at Melbourne Uni, you took me into your wonderful wide brood as a fellow Colac kid. You really looked after me and the music was always fun. Then we worked together in Sth Melbourne at the Correspondence School and that was rather eventful too. Good memories over a very long time – 40+ years – just sad that I didn’t get to see much of you over the last few years. RIP

  46. Music, books and art were your loves.
A genius you were, naturally eccentric and a little brash at times, but so what!
You had a wicked wit that etched permanent scars in my head, some hilarious memories there, my friend.
A teacher with a unique bohemian style that impacted many, some of whom kept in touch with you long after school and became your friends.
At your core, an honest, sincere, loyal country girl who was a ‘hoot’ of a friend.
I called you Rose ???? and rarely Ros, because you were really a true Rose amongst the thorns…mostly,…always.
RIP dear ????, with your beloved brother and Mother, who you dearly cherished and missed deeply.
Sincere condolences to the Hallyburton family.

  52. Ms Hallyburton was a firework that never lost its spark. And I’m referring to the memories that are etched into the minds of her students (especially me) that outweighs the remembereance of any other art teachers. Because she was definitely so unique. Just a few quirks ; strums her guitar so arbitratily and beautifully, sips her sparkling water, (rumours say other liquor haha) drinking from the same wrinkled plastic 2L and doesn’t take off her signature black shades even indoors in class. Will never forget when she made a student go and grab some apples she was craving from her boot in her car haha.
At Maribyrnong college I was taught by her from 2017 – 2018 in Visual Communication Design. She was brilliantly bizarre in the best way and so hilarious you couldn’t believe she was a ‘teacher’. Her randomly summoning her lil harmonica in a heartbeat always edged a grin on my face and made me burst out in laughter. It was something funny I looked forward to in anticipation haha. She was especially fond of me ( I was good natured, attentive and in her eyes I produced great artworks, not trying to boast, art was one of my best fields lol) but also probably due to the fact that I was the sister of my older brother who previously was a student of hers that she liked. Ms Hallyburton always greeted me warmly, and smiled when I’d walk up to her for help. I am still remembering the small crescents of her eyes in my mind as I am typing this :’)
    Bless her soul.

As a class we shared information about ourselves and our lives to her. I always found it endearing when she would often ask how ‘Chayne’ was, my stepfather. I would be surprised that she remembered. Ms never forgot about my stepdad after I mentioned him, I guess it stuck to her, she found it pretty amusing and cool that he had such a unique name haha.

It’s memories like these that just bring joy, warmth and smiles to your face at times when you need a pick me up or when you just sit and reminisce, revelling in all the treasured moments of experiences and fleeting people you’ve met across the span of your lifetime.
It’s a nice feeling. It’s beautiful to know you will always touch the hearts and minds of others. And the thing is you won’t even realise the moments, and which, you’re creating for them.

Ms Hallyburton, Thank you for your true presence, fun times and service as an art teacher. May your harmonies play in heaven and your soul rest in peace.

With lots of love and blessings – Suhayla Murad, a fond student.

  53. Dear Ms Hallyburton,

Your teachings in art, and visual communications left a mark in my spirit, and gave me fond memories with you in class. You were such a influential person, and I’m grateful to meet someone who understands my needs to empower my creativity. When I was saddened at times, you were available to talk to, at lunch time. During those conversation, you lifted up my negative energy, and kept me going. As I move on to the Bachelor of Design, at RMIT, I hope you have found your peace. Your presence is one of the kind I wouldn’t forget in my time at Maribyrnong College, thank you for looking out for me.

    Your VCD, and Art student
