  10. Deepest sympathy to all the McCrickard family on the sad passing of May. What a wonderful long life she had!
I am writing this message for my dear mother Jean Russell, who passed away June 2023at the age of 95! May and mum had a long friendship for over 75years. They met in the early 1940’s at the Colac Hospital where they both worked.
The last time they met and talked about the old days was June 2018 when mum celebrated turning 90! True lifelong friends.

I loved popping in for a chat, not doing it nearly often enough. Our kids loved you like you were part of our own family. We are going to miss you dearly but will remember you fondly.

  24. On May’s 98th birthday, I asked her what her secret was—her advice for living a life as long and full as hers. Without skipping a beat, she replied: “Just keep walking.”

A simple statement. But one that, to me, perfectly captured the spirit of May.

Taken literally, it reflected her astonishing physical endurance—like the 40-kilometre treks she made as a teenager from Beech Forest to Colac to attend the community dance. She’d dance all night long, then turn around and walk all the way home again. Or her “leisurely” strolls from her house in town to Mick and Anne’s place in Corunnun, well into her 60s. You could read it as a nod to her fitness and vigour—but it was so much more than that.

To me, “just keep walking” captured something far deeper about the way May lived. It wasn’t just about staying active—it was about quiet, unwavering resilience. A kind of grace and grit that never needed to announce itself. She faced challenge after challenge across her long life, and somehow kept putting one foot in front of the other. Not with drama, but with determination. With humour. With love.

Her strength was innate—woven into the fabric of who she was. She just kept going. For her children. Her grandchildren. Her siblings. Her friends. Her community.

And that’s one of the many things that made her so powerful.

It didn’t take long to realise you were in the presence of someone truly special when you met May. I’d say it took me all of 15 minutes to feel inspired. Here was a woman well into her 90s—fiercely independent, intelligent, funny, graceful—and incredibly sharp. May spoke her mind. She told it how it was. And she’d throw in a witty jab for good measure.

Born in the 1920s, she forged a life on her own terms long before women were told they could. She didn’t wait for permission—she simply did what needed to be done. And she did it all with strength, dignity, and soul. A one-of-a-kind, ahead-of-her-time, immeasurably awesome woman. And everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her knew it. She was the Queen of the family in every sense.

Some people measure a life in achievements or accolades. But I think the most meaningful measure is the love that surrounds you in the end. And May was absolutely surrounded.

To witness how loved, respected and deeply cherished she was—by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends—is a testament to the remarkable woman she was, and to the values and sense of care she passed on. Her life was full of love, adventure, resilience and determination. And if any of us can live a life even half as full and brave as May’s, we’ll have done incredibly well.

    To achieve it?
    Just keep walking.

May—may you keep walking forever in peace. Thank you for everything you were, and everything you gave. You were truly one of a kind, and it was an honour to know you—even for a short time.

  25. May was the heart of our family—the matriarch in the truest sense, and the most beautiful soul I’ve ever known. She carried incredible strength with softness, and led with love, patience, and grace.

Her home was always warm and full of care, the kind of place where you felt completely safe and understood. She loved without limits and gave without ever needing to be asked.

If I can grow to be even half the person she was, I’ll be a happy man. I strive every day to live with the same kindness, strength, and warmth that she showed to me over the years.

May you rest in peace, beautiful Mavis. You will always be deeply loved and never forgotten.
