  3. In death as in life, Ted Symonds quietly and pragmatically assessed the situation and without fuss got on with the job. It has been my great privilege to have known Ted for over fifty years.

As a driver and guide on early rock collecting expeditions with Des and me, he displayed a calm and supportive attitude. Ted’s long handle scoop was a civilised way to extract the precious stones from the wild surf of Moonlight Head.

When three wanna be racing-car drivers arrived with a has-been racing car, Ted calmly accepted us roaring around his back paddock. When there were complaints about the taste of his sheep manure, he helped build mudguards to keep the irritation at bay.

His confidence in a nervous young man was greatly appreciated. When droving sheep along the highway verge, Ted requested of me, “Bring up the Crown” (his beloved Toyota Crown). This initially elicited panic in a very inexperienced driver but after successfully completing the task gave me deep satisfaction.

Ted didn’t say much but Des kept us entertained about his exploits for hours.

The calm pragmatic way Ted assessed each situation and did what he could to help created a marvellous role model for those who came after him. R.I.P. Ted.
